2017 Proclamation

The following proclamation was issued by mayor Alan M. Arakawa and was to have been presented at a public ceremony at the canceled Queen Ka'ahamanu Center festival on Sunday, April 30, 2017.
 
WHEREAS, the 9^th Annual Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival will be held at the Ka‘anapalli Beach Hotel on Friday, April 28, 2017, through Sunday, April 30, 2017, and features some of the world's greatest Hawaiian steel guitarists; and
 
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian steel guitar is an instrument indigenous to Hawai‘i and is culturally and musically significant in Hawaiian song and dance; and
 
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian steel guitar is undergoing a revitalization through music concerts and festivals statewide; and
 
WHEREAS, the Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival is designed to extend this revitalization to the residents of Maui through school visits, workshops, open stage performance opportunities, and public concerts.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALAN M. ARAKAWA, Mayor of the County of Maui, have the distinct honor of proclaiming April 24 - 30, 2017 as

MAUI STEEL GUITAR APPRECIATION WEEK

throughout the County of Maui in appreciation of the art of Hawaiian steel guitar-playing and in recognition of the many talented artists who are continuing our heritage through the perpetuation of Hawaiian steel guitar traditions.
