Richard Tom and Mele Fong comprise the professional husband-wife duo, The Hawaiian Serenaders. They play ukulele and bass and both sing, specializing in traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole songs (Hawaiian style music with English words) made popular during the Hawaii Calls radio program of the 1930s and beyond. They also perform a variety of pop and big band jazz standards.
Performing together since 1994, The Hawaiian Serenaders represented the State of Hawaii by giving a concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1996. Both originally from Oahu, Richard Tom and Mele Fong met on stage while working in Washington, D.C. and moved to Maui in 2000 where they continue to entertain audiences today.
