2014 Festival - Saturday Open Stage Sessions-University of Hawaii Maui College
One of Saturday's Open Stage Sessions presented Hawaiian steel guitar students of Joel Katz' MUS 190 v Hawaiian Steel Guitar class. This is the first-ever steel guitar class offered at Maui College and it has been a great success. The class began in January, 2014, and has twelve students enrolled. The class meets for three hours on Saturday mornings, and Keola Donaghy from the Institute for Hawaiian music at the college is helping to support the course through funding and supplying instruments.
Katz's approach to teaching steel is to have students learn to visualize repeating patterns in bar positions in common chord progressions and apply these to different key signatures. Included in the class repertoire are Puamana, Lahainaluna, Sea of Love, Sleepwalk, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
